We have sold our tour for 29 years and never cancelled a departure. Number of participants is limited to 20 persons. This tour will be conducted by one of our bilingual tour leaders and will particularly appeal to active and adventurous travellers seeking an 'in-depth' visit to Japan.

MUCH OF THE TRAVEL WILL BE BY JAPAN RAIL PASS AND BECAUSE OF THE GREAT VARIETY OF INCLUDED SIGHTSEEING, A REASONABLE LEVEL OF FITNESS IS ESSENTIAL.

Accommodation includes a buddhist temple at Mt Koya (similar to Ryokan / Japanese Inn) and a 350 year old farm house in Ogimachi.

Day 1 ~ Saturday SYDNEY / KYOTO
 
Interstate passengers take connecting flights to Sydney. JAL day flight to Tokyo. Transfer to Haneda Airport, flight to Kansai. Check into New Miyako Hotel.
Day 2 ~ Sunday KYOTO
 
At leisure.
Day 3 ~ Monday KYOTO
 
Day sightseeing Heian Shrine built to commemorate Kyoto's founding. Kinkakuji (Golden Pavillion) and the Handicraft Centre. After lunch, stroll along the popular 'philosopher's walk' the Kiyomizu Dera overlooking the city before returning to the hotel. This evening join your escort for a 'welcome dinner'.
Day 4 ~ Tuesday KYOTO
 
Morning at leisure. Afternoon tour to the old capital of Nara to see the Deer Park, Kasuga Shrine with its thousands of lanterns and the immense Todaiji (World's largest wooden building) housing the immense Bronze Buddha.
Day 5 ~ Wednesday KYOTO
 
At leisure join your escort in an excursion to a peaceful mountain Hot Springs area. Relax and enjoy this Japanese tradition in segregated facilities. Participation is optional. Remainder of the day is free.
Day 6 ~ Wednesday KYOTO / HIROSHIMA
 
Leave by bullet train to Hiroshima where we visit the Peace Park, Atomic Bomb Museum and epicentre of the bombs explosion. Since the war, Hiroshima has doubled in size to be a modern busy metropolis but a short distance west we find Miyajima, a peaceful island where our sightseeing includes the world famous Torii. Late afternoon return to Kyoto.
Day 7 ~ Friday KYOTO / MT KOYA
 
By chartered motorcoach to the Buddhist Sanctuary at Mt Koya. Accommodation Japanese style with separate bathing and toilet facilities. Dinner and breakfast will be Buddhist vegetarian. Sightseeing at Kongobuji, Headquarters of the Shingon Sect, beautiful Banryutei; reputed to be the largest stone garden in Japan and Okunoin a tranquil cemetery with its old Cedars towering over the remains of some of Japans most famous rulers and scholars.
Day 8 ~ Saturday MT KOYA / KANAZAWA
 
A morning motorcoach to Osaka, then express Japan Rail to the west coast city Kanazawa. Accommodation at the Miyako Hotel. This city still remains much of the charm of Japan and is famous for its pottery, lacquerware, Yuzen Silks and Gold Leaf. This afternoon we visit the Gold Leaf Museum to see examples and hear an explanation of this fine work.
Day 9 ~ Sunday KANAZAWA
 
A busy morning visiting Nomura Samurai House and spacious Kenrokuen Garden, one of Japan's most famous gardens and reputed to be the best. Afternoon free to explore. Perhaps Myoryuji (Ninja Temple) with its many hidden passage ways.
Day 10 ~ Monday KANAZAWA / OGIMACHI
 
By motorcoach through some of the best scenery in Japan to Ogimachi, a small village hidden between forests and a rushing mountain river. Here you stay in a three hundred year old thatched roof farmhouse. The buildings are Gassho Zukkuri style and today can only be viewed in a few remote locations. You will find the Japanese style sleeping arrangements much more comfortable than you might have thought and enjoy a home cooked dinner and breakfast.
Day 11 ~ Tuesday OGIMACHI / TAKAYAMA / TOKYO
 
After breakfast be sure to stroll the narrow lanes and try to capture the peaceful atmosphere on film. Then by motorcoach to Takayama, known as 'Little Kyoto' because of its many old buildings and merchant streets. Time to explore before continuing by JR Express to Nagoya. Change to another 'Bullet' train to Tokyo and transfer to the Hotel Grand Palace.
Day 12 ~ Wednesday TOKYO
 
Morning tour to Asakusa Kannon Temple and Nakamise, the colourful shoping arcade full of souvenirs and novelty items. Then to Ueno Park. On to Ginza with its up-market boutiques, excellent Department Stores and the Kabuki Theatre. Afternoon at leisure.
Day 13 ~ Thursday NIKKO / SENDAI
 
Full day sightseeing to the picturesque Nikko National Park, including Irohazaka driveway, Lake Chuzenji, Kegon Waterfall and the architecturally unique Toshogu Shrine. Here is the mausoleum for the famous Shogun, leyasu Tokugawa. Late afternoon return to Sendai with accommodation for 2 nights at Sendai Hotel.
Day 14 ~ Friday SENDAI
 
Sightseeing to the remains of Sendai Castle, Shiogama Fertility Shrine and Matsushima, pine clad islands recorded as some of Japan's three most beautiful locations.
Day 15 ~ Saturday SENDAI / TOKYO
 
Return rail to Tokyo. Accommodation Hotel Grand Palace. Rest of day free. Evening farewell dinner.
Day 16 ~ Sunday TOKYO
 
At leisure or optional sightseeing to Tokyo Disneyland/Disneysea, Kamakura or Fuji Hakone National Park.
Day 17 ~ Monday TOKYO / SYDNEY
 
A free morning for last minute shopping or sightseeing. Afternoon transfer to Narita Airport for our overnight flight home. Dinner and breakfast will be served on board.
